What happens during a cleaning and exam

Your visit starts with a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing cannot reach. We then polish your teeth and review your gum health, looking for any early signs of trouble.

Even with great habits at home, hardened tartar builds up in spots a toothbrush cannot clear, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Our hygienist gently removes it, smooths the surfaces with a polish, and measures the health of your gums so we have a clear picture of how things are doing.

Dr. B performs a thorough exam, often with low-radiation digital X-rays, to check for cavities, gum disease, and other concerns. The exam also includes a quick oral cancer screening and a look at older fillings and crowns. We will walk you through anything we find and answer every question before you leave.

How often should you come in

Most patients do best with a cleaning and exam every six months, though some benefit from more frequent visits. We will recommend a schedule based on your individual needs and gum health.

Patients with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain health conditions often do better on a three or four month rhythm, while others are fine twice a year. We will tailor the timing to you rather than applying a one-size-fits-all rule.

Keeping up with regular visits is the single most effective way to avoid costly treatment later, and it keeps your smile bright and your breath fresh in between. Catching a small cavity or early gum issue at a routine visit is far simpler and more affordable than treating it after it has grown.

Comfortable care for the whole family

We see patients of all ages, from young children to grandparents, and we tailor each visit to the person in the chair. Our gentle approach makes even nervous patients feel at ease.

If it has been a while since your last cleaning, there is no judgment here. We will simply get you back on track.
