What sealants are

A sealant is a thin, protective coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where deep grooves trap food and bacteria. The sealant smooths over those grooves so they are easier to keep clean.

The back molars are the hardest teeth to brush well, and their natural pits and fissures are often too narrow for even a single toothbrush bristle to reach the bottom. That is exactly where cavities tend to start. A sealant seals off those vulnerable spots, giving plaque and acid far fewer places to hide.

Applying a sealant takes only a few minutes per tooth, with no drilling and no numbing required. We clean and dry the tooth, brush on the liquid sealant so it flows into every groove, then harden it with a curing light. You can eat and drink right away, and there is no recovery time and nothing to adjust to afterward.

Who benefits most

Children and teens are ideal candidates, since cavities often form soon after molars come in. Sealing those teeth early can prevent decay during the most cavity-prone years.

The first permanent molars usually arrive around age six and the second molars around age twelve, and sealing them soon after they erupt offers the most protection. Younger children who struggle to brush thoroughly, or anyone with a history of cavities, often gain the most from this simple step.

Adults with deep grooves and no existing decay can also benefit from the same simple protection. During your exam we will look at the shape of your molars and your cavity history to let you know whether sealants make sense for you.

How long sealants last

Sealants can protect teeth for several years with good care. We check them at your regular visits and reapply if needed.

Normal chewing can gradually wear a sealant down, and once in a while a corner can chip away, which is why we look them over at every cleaning. Touching one up is quick and easy, so your teeth stay covered without any fuss. Avoiding habits like chewing ice or hard candy helps your sealants stay intact longer.

Sealants are one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent cavities, saving time, money, and discomfort down the road. Many dental plans cover sealants for children, and even without coverage they are an affordable, low-effort investment in avoiding fillings later. Our team is happy to check your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket cost before we begin.
